Santani Wellness is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Since opening in 2016, it has become one of Sri Lanka’s most-loved wellness retreats and one of our favourite places for a restorative stay.
Its name means ‘in harmony with’, which neatly captures the thinking behind it (and the setting!). The architecture, food, treatments and daily programme have all been considered to help guests step away from the demands of home and focus properly on their wellbeing.
Santani sits within 116 acres of a former tea estate, surrounded by forest, mountains and rice fields. Its position in Sri Lanka’s hill country brings cooler air, truly incredible views and a real sense of being immersed in nature.
The contemporary chalets are understated but perfectly designed, with little to distract from the landscape outside. Large windows frame the views across the Dumbara Valley, while the absence of televisions encourages guests to switch off – it’s recommended to go screen and tech free during your stay!
Santani describes its design as the ‘Architecture of Silence’. It may sound rather grand, but it makes perfect sense once you are there. The uncluttered rooms, open spaces and proximity to nature make it much easier to slow down and switch off.
Santani has taken an individual approach to wellness since it opened. Programmes begin with a consultation, during which the team considers your health, lifestyle and reasons for visiting. Your treatments, meals and activities are then tailored accordingly.
Traditional Ayurveda is combined with contemporary wellness expertise, with programmes focusing on areas including stress, sleep, detox, weight management, yoga and general rebalancing.
Depending on your programme, your day might include Hatha yoga, meditation, a guided walk and a personalised treatment. The excellent hillside spa also has a sauna, steam room and thermal saltwater bath. Treatment rooms open onto the surrounding landscape, so you can hear the birds and the sounds of the forest while you are there.
The days have enough structure to keep you focused, without becoming overly rigid. There is time to read, rest, swim or simply enjoy the view. It is one of the reasons Santani works so well for guests who want expert guidance without the feel of a strict health clinic.
The food is another highlight. Santani follows the Ayurvedic principle of Rasa Haya, which centres on six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent.
Meals are planned to suit your programme and individual needs, with much of the fresh produce coming from Santani’s own garden or nearby farms. The dishes are beautifully presented, full of flavour and incredibly satisfying.
During its first decade, Santani has received an impressive collection of international awards. It has been named one of TIME magazine’s World’s Greatest Places, featured among Tatler’s best spas and recognised by Forbes for its unique design. In 2025, it also became Sri Lanka’s only wellness resort to receive a MICHELIN Key.
The awards are certainly well deserved, although it is the experience itself that keeps Santani high on our list. The setting is extraordinary, the treatments are excellent and the team looks after guests with the warmth for which Sri Lanka is so loved.
Santani is a particularly good choice if you are feeling stressed, tired or in need of a complete change of scene. It works well for solo travellers, couples and friends, including those trying a dedicated wellness retreat for the first time.
A five-night stay offers a useful introduction, while seven nights gives you longer to settle in and benefit from the programme. Ten to fourteen nights may be more suitable for intensive Ayurvedic work or a more substantial reset.
We can also include Santani within a longer holiday around Sri Lanka, perhaps combining a wellness stay with the Cultural Triangle, tea country or time on the coast. Let us know your ideas and ‘must sees’ – we can craft something tailor made for you.
Ten years after opening, Santani still feels original. It has remained true to its founding ideas while continuing to develop its programmes and expertise. Most importantly, it gives guests the space, care and guidance to return home feeling rested, clearer and much more like themselves.
Happy tenth anniversary to the Santani team!
