Hidden in the mountains just under 1.5 hours east of Rome, is the stunning wellness & medical hotel Palazzo Fiuggi. Located in the small town Fiuggi, famous for its Acqua di Fiuggi, Palazzo Fiuggi embraces the healing waters and incorporates it into their enhanced medical and wellness programmes. The therapeutic spring water is offered as drinking water but also used in hydrotherapy sessions, helping with a variety of ailments and chronic conditions. As the name Palazzo indicates, the hotel has a palatial appearance, and was built to be the grandest hotel in Europe. It still is a place to be seen, as it attracts high value clients and celebrities through its doors, such as Oprah Winfrey in 2023.
The hotel is renowned for its medical programmes, which include longevity, rejuvenation, weight loss, detox, fitness, hiking, ayurveda and regenerative programmes, curated by an excellent medical team. On the main floor of the impressive building you will find the reception with gorgeous Italian marble, library, restaurant, yoga studio, movement lab (gym), lounge for your morning and afternoon snacks, and boutique. On the lower floor you will find the extensive spa and medical centre, with numerous treatment rooms, hydrotherapy pool, indoor pool, sauna, steam room, Kneipp circuit, and two outdoor pools.
On arrival at the hotel I was escorted to my room and then had my first medical consultation – an ECG and 3D body scan. The next morning I also had a Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. Afterwards the results were discussed with the doctor so goals can be set for the wellness programme. The programmes include exercise classes and treatments. I had a wonderful aromatherapy massage, and then after my 3 hour hike a much needed full body massage, by wonderful therapists. My two sessions in the hydrotherapy pool were very relaxing and great for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory effects.
The hotel has recently partnered with Icaros to use their Virtual Reality Movement machine for fitness training, providing both an intense full body workout but also virtual reality fun. I tried it and it’s a lot harder than it looks!
The food was my favourite part of the stay – there are several menus depending on the programme you are doing, but all are created by 3 star Michelin chef Heinz Beck and as delicious as they are stunningly beautiful. The menu has a Mediterranean theme and combines fresh fish (cooked or raw) with local fruits and vegetables. The service is second to none and the staff are incredibly polite, friendly and know all guests by name.
