Choose a bedroom in the main house (room 2 has its own huge jacuzzi) or in one of the converted outbuildings. There’s a book-filled sitting room with an open fire, a cosy little bar and an outdoor terrace for drinks in warmer weather. Meals are eaten in a light and airy restaurant; simple, delicious English dishes are cooked with an Italian twist.

The garden spa is a delight, reached along a leafy pathway. Lounge outdoors in the invitingly warm hydrotherapy pool and breathe in the clear country air, then pop inside for a steam or sauna. There’s a spacious relaxation room with Italian leather loungers and countryside views, and experienced therapists offer an array of treatments.

Choose facials, manicures or pedicures to spruce yourself up, or relax and let go with a range of full body rituals devised by British brand Aromatherapy Associates – you can also book Time Out if you don’t want to decide till the day what you need.

To give yourself an energy boost, walks and cycle rides can be had through the nearby Cotswold hills – maps are provided, and there are four good bikes available free of charge. There’s a private cinema and tennis court in the grounds, and local fishing, rowing and golf can be arranged.

Take the opportunity to relax in your own private cinema. Featuring the latest high-definition projector, the Cinema at Barnsley House is air-conditioned and can accommodate up to thirty people in comfortable two-seat pink leather sofas. Use of the cinema is complimentary to residents.
