Bugaboos Lodge offers some of the best heli skiing and heli hiking holidays in Canada. This is not least because both sports were invented by a group of intrepid friends right here 50 years ago. For them, the virgin slopes and backcountry of British Colombia’s Kootenays region had an allure which could not be shaken. Today, the same feeling of wonder overtakes those who visit.
The lodge is located among the glorious vistas of the Bugaboos Spires, at the base of Bugaboos Glacier. It has gone from a simple logging lodge to a bespoke stay. Only reachable by air, it is a modern version of traditional stone and exposed log mountain huts. Its interiors are filled with light thanks to large windows. Warmed by a welcoming atmosphere and wood burning fires, it has a west coast style. Formalities are therefore ignored in favour of cosy furnishings and simple luxury.
Unsurprisingly, the most popular activities for adventure lovers are Bugaboos’ heli skiing and heli hiking trips. Limited to 11 guests, the signature trip takes in the glacier and can last one to seven days. Backcountry, alpine and cross-country skiing are additional favourites over the winter months. During the summer, attention turns towards guided heli hikes, alongside via ferrata rock climbing.
Between adventures, guests can make use of a modern spa area with massage menu, steam room and sauna. The lodge’s rooftop not only provides spectacular views, but also a hot tub from which to enjoy them. Back inside, there is a games room and music room, gear and gift shop, and climbing wall.
There are 32 guest bedrooms with good sized windows and a small balcony for enjoying the mountain vistas. Rooms are air conditioned, as well as containing a coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave.
