Puente Romano Beach Resort was one of the first to bring luxury holidays to Marbella. Originally opened in 1979, it has kept pace with the changing decades effortlessly. Architecturally, Puente Romano takes its inspiration from the whitewashed buildings which have dotted the region for centuries. Interiors have a modern yet homely feel. Decorated in muted tones, they provide a gentle contrast to the rich blues of the Mediterranean and green of the surrounding gardens.
Stays at Puente Romano generally focus around its impressive sporting facilities. It has a well-renowned ten-court tennis club. Golf, stand-up paddleboarding and water sports are simple to organize. A well-equipped gym provides everything from cardio training to yoga and belly dancing sessions.
However, there is also a Scandi-styled spa complete with Mediterranean-facing treatment rooms, indoor pressure jet-pool, sauna and steam room. The resort has four swimming pools, and dedicated sun loungers on the beach.
When it comes to dining, guests have the choice of a dozen restaurants. They range from a seafood grill on the beach to the two Michelin-starred Italian cuisine of Aleli Marbella.
Puente Romano features 219 good-sized suites grouped into small hamlet-like clusters named after towns in the region. Designed by interiors specialist Andrew Martin, most tick the box when it comes to contemporary cool. Others have a slightly more traditional look. Either way, you will be able to enjoy a private terrace with views of either the sea or the mountains. The smallest are Junior Suites at 55 m2. There are also three stand-alone villas with four to five bedrooms.
Fly to Malaga airport (2.45 hours from London), followed by a 35-40 minute transfer to the resort.
