Three Bars Ranch is proof that looking to experience the Rocky Mountain’s cowboy culture does not mean having to give up on luxury. Located roughly equally between Glacier and Banff national parks, the ranch is a great destination for anyone seeking out adventure holidays in Canada, especially those with an equine theme.
With private grounds spanning 35,000 acres, Three Bars Ranch is a purpose-built series of 21 low wood buildings centred around a large log-built main lodge nearly 700m2. This contains the ranch’s shared guest spaces, including a saloon bar, recreation lounge and dining room. The décor feels perfectly in keeping with the traditional construction, boasting open A-frame roofs, mounted deer heads and horse-riding regalia.
A working cattle ranch and family home, at any one time Three Bars Ranch has 140 head of beef cattle. It has almost as many horses, and a 2-to-1 horse-to-guest ratio ensuring everyone who wants to is able to ride. Horses can be taken out by guests of any age and experience level. Rides exploring the trails and forests around the ranch are scheduled each morning and evening and limited to a maximum of six guests per group. Riding lessons are also offered at no extra charge. Eight miles of private river means Three Bars Ranch should not be forgotten as a great fly-fishing destination either.
While the focus is on its horses, the facilities at Three Bars Ranch extend to a heated indoor pool, outdoor hot tub and plenty of space to relax outside of the guest cabins. Dining is buffet style, with the option of private and family seating. Menus are traditionally Canadian, with grilled meats and fish predominating but with a fine-dining twist which includes freshly-baked breads and homemade desserts.
Limited to just 45 guests at any one time, recently-renovated cabins feature hand-crafted furniture and a front porch. They hint at the region’s cowboy past while providing modern amenities including high-speed internet, a fridge and coffee machine.
