My first ever trip to Canada was one that is hard to beat – I was able to experience many of the highlights of western Canada and call it work! I’d been invited to experience the Rocky Mountaineer luxury train from Vancouver to Jasper. You can’t do this without spending some time in Vancouver, visiting Vancouver Island and the rest of the Rocky Mountains!
I started off my trip with a few days in Vancouver, which allowed me to explore Vancouver itself, take a horse and carriage ride through Stanley Park, walk over the Capilano suspension bridge, travel up the gondola to Grouse Mountain (with gorgeous views over Vancouver and the bay) and take a seaplane to Victoria on Vancouver Island for some whale watching. Vancouver is art and food heaven, you definitely need a few days to explore it!
The Rocky Mountaineer is a whole adventure in itself – two full days on the train witnessing stunning scenery on your way into the Rockies. Going for Gold Service means you’re on the upper deck with the best views, and gourmet food and drinks all day.
After arriving in Jasper I travelled down the Rocky Mountains towards Banff, stopping off at gorgeous viewpoints, icy blue lakes and the famous Icefield Parkway, where you can go onto the glacier in a large off-road truck! Banff itself is a quaint country style town where you can base yourself for sightseeing or skiing. You can’t visit Banff without taking the gondola up Sulphur mountain – these are some of the most gorgeous views you’ll see! Or if you want something even more special you can view the snow covered mountain peaks from a helicopter!
This first trip has made me fall in love with Canada and it’s now one of my favourite countries! I would move there in a heartbeat if I could stand the cold winters! 😊
