Cape Town is a great place to surf! If you’re not a surfer yet and want to learn, there’s no better place than here.
Our expert, enthusiastic and professional instructors have all the credentials, equipment – and patience! – to teach you and your family this healthy sport. Surf lessons are conducted along Muizenberg Beach which has lovely long, low sets of waves ideal for learning on. Be warned though, the water is rather cold, especially in summer when the Antarctic currents brush past, so you will need to wear full wetsuits (provided by the surf school too).
For the more experienced surfer, you can choose from many great locations around the peninsular where the powerful waves beg your attention. The winter months (June – August) are particularly great as the swell is pushed in by huge Cape Storms. One of the coolest places for big waves is Dungeons just off the Sentinel in Hout Bay. This spot sees some awesome, roaring waves of up to around 18ft or more… making it the popular location for the international Big Wave competition! Definitely not for beginners, but a huge thrill for those that can take the pace. It’s even a great spectacle to just enjoy watching the pro’s at play.
