Snorkelling in Gozo

Gozo is well known as Europe’s best scuba diving destination which, by default, makes it a great place for snorkelling too…
We are recommending just two places to stay on Gozo and, if you want to have a very short stroll to the sea, we would suggest staying at the charming and rustic Ta Cenc.  But, as its such a small island and all the beaches and coves are so easy to get to, it doesn’t really matter where you choose to stay – but for keen snorkellers, the best options are probably on the west coast near to the Kempinski San Lawrenz.

One of the joys of snorkelling around Gozo is the remarkable 30m visibility plus, in the summer months, lovely warm sea water.  Many people regard snorkelling around Gozo as one of the Mediterranean’s little known gems, with places like Dwerja Bay on the island’s west coast and, just 200m away, the famous Azure Window and the adjacent, remarkable ‘inland sea’ with its cave tunnel out to the sea.  This area is the perfect place for some fabulous snorkelling and the Kempinski San Lawrenz is about 1km from all these spots.  It’s an easy 5 minute cycle ride, or a 15 minute walk from the hotel.

Another rather good snorkelling destination in Europe is the island of Madeira, particularly if you like the idea of combining snorkeling with kayaking.  Also, in Madeira, you can get the opportunity of swimming with dolphins.  Even though the island is in the Atlantic the sea rarely falls below 18C even in the winter months.
